R&B singer-songwriter SZA, born Solana Rowe, recently dropped her sophomore album to widespread critical acclaim. ‘SOS’ arrived this past weekend after the singer teased the project multiple times this year. Fans have waited five years for a full-length project since her debut album, ‘CTRL’, was released. While she did not entirely disappear- she joined Doja Cat on the chart-topping ‘Kiss Me More’, and recruited Pharrell and TyDollaSign for ‘Hit Different’.
When Rowe finally released her studio album, the musical world seemingly froze. ‘SOS’ debuted at the top of the charts in more than 50 countries, and has already surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify alone. Fans were pleasantly surprised to experience more of the experimental sounds that SZA is known for:
“I’m so tired of being pegged as an R&B artist. I feel like that’s super disrespectful, because people are just like, ‘Oh, ‘cause you’re Black, this is what you have to be’ – like, put in a box. And I hate that. With songs on this album, it’s supposed to help round out the picture and the story.”
